Winona Elaine (Huff) Johnson of Marcellus, Michigan passed away on July 17, 2025 at The Waters in Wakarusa, Indiana. A graveside service will be held at 3 pm Wednesday, July 23, 2025 at Rosehill Cemetery in Nicholsville, Michigan. Brian Steffen, a good family friend, will officiate at the gravesite. Winona was born in Dowagiac, Michigan to Seth Huff and Catharina Conaway Huff. Winona attended school in Dowagiac and graduated from Dowagiac High School. She married Carroll Johnson on September 9, 1949 under the arch in the living room of the Huff home at 17025 McKenzie Street, Marcellus, MI. Winona graduated from County Normal to teach in the one room schoolhouse at Spinks Corners, Michigan. She later taught in Volinia. It was annexed into the Marcellus Community Schools District, and she continued in the Marcellus schools. At this time, she completed her teaching degree from Western Michigan University. Winona taught for 39 years. At retirement, she and Loraine Griner went into the catering business serving the multi-county area.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Seth and Catharina; her brother, Maurice; her sister, Donna; and her husband, Carroll. Winona is survived by her children, Curt (Paula), and Cathleen (Tim) Hoogenboom; grandchildren, Curt "Dusty" (Michele) Kingen and step granddaughter, Alissa (Steven) Clayton; 4 great grandchildren, Lexi (Jacob) Grove, Bella, Kash, and Colt Kingen; 4 step great grandchildren, Landon, Kendall, Connor, and Caroline Clayton; and 2 great great grandchildren, Tripp and Jaycee Grove.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Marcellus Food Pantry, in memory of Winona. Anyone wishing to gather following this ceremony, is welcome at the Hudson Memorial Building at 179 N. Jones Street in Marcellus for some refreshments.
