Samuel Michael Lopez, a man whose life was a symphony of generosity, wisdom, and adventure, passed away surrounded by love. He was a creative soul, a passionate music lover across all genres, and the kind of person whose advice was sought by many and whose heart was open to all.
Born in Michigan, Sam’s journey took him from the Great Lakes to the vibrant Bay Area of California, the bustling streets of Chicago, and the lively energy of Minneapolis, where he worked at the Mall of America. No matter where life led him, he remained deeply connected to his roots and to those he loved most.
Sam had a profound love for the outdoors; hiking the coastal trails of Pacifica, CA, canoeing through quiet waters, and sharing the serenity of nature with his son Taylor during summer visits. He introduced Taylor to the guitar, nurturing a bond through music that would echo for a lifetime. One of their most cherished memories was attending their first concert together: Sick Puppies in Grand Rapids when Taylor was just 13.
He was also a gifted interior designer with an eye for detail and a flair for transformation. Sam customized Jeeps with creativity and precision, and he had a deep affection for animals that reflected his gentle spirit.
Generous to a fault, Sam was the kind of man who would drop everything to help a friend or family member in need. His wisdom was matched only by his warmth, and his adventurous spirit never dimmed. Whether it was a spontaneous hike or a heartfelt conversation, Sam made every moment meaningful.
Twelve years ago, he returned to Michigan, bringing with him a lifetime of stories, laughter, and love. His legacy lives on in the music he shared, the trails he walked, and the lives he touched.
He leaves behind his son, Taylor, who carries forward Sam’s love of music, nature, and heartfelt connection.
Sam is also survived by his daughter, Tammy Lopez of McAllen, TX; and two beloved grandchildren, Zion and Zoe, also of McAllen, TX. He is further survived by his sisters, Grace Lopez of Grand Rapids, MI, and Priscilla Lopez of Holland, MI; his brother, Julian Lopez (Heather) of Grand Rapids, MI; and his nieces and nephews: Isaac, Elias, and Ari of Holland, and Jailyn and Atlas of Grand Rapids. All carry the Lopez name and the spirit of their beloved uncle.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Julio C. Lopez and Maria Elena Wiser, and his partner of over 20 years, Kim Burkhart, whose love and companionship were a cherished part of his life.
Sam will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
