Roy
Bowling
May 10, 1956 — Aug 19, 2026
Kalamazoo, MI
Roy Bowling, born May 10, 1956, in Baltimore, Maryland, grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he built a life defined by hard work, loyalty, music, laughter, and a deep love for the people he called his own.
Roy was strong-willed and determined, and he never pretended to be anything other than exactly who he was. What you saw was what you got. Straightforward and honest, he lived with a strong work ethic, integrity, and the belief that if something was worth doing, it was worth doing right. He worked as a metal finisher at Checker Motors and was the kind of man who could build or fix just about anything. Cars, Harleys, projects around the house, Roy could usually figure it out, and once he set his mind to something, there wasn't much that could stand in his way.
On December 28, 1992, Roy married the love of his life, Deanna Dawn Bowling, in Williamsburg, Kentucky. For 34 years, they shared a life together filled with family, laughter, music, and countless memories. Through all the years and all that life brought their way, Deanna remained at the center of Roy's world.
Music was a big part of Roy's life. He had a passion for good old classic country music and a love for guitars that grew into a collection of nearly 20 over the years. But his guitars weren't simply something to collect, Roy loved to play. Friday nights were often spent at his friend Steve Barrett's, playing and enjoying music with Steve and the band. Those evenings of friendship and music were some of the simple pleasures Roy treasured.
When he wasn't playing music or working with his hands, Roy loved being outdoors. The mountains held a special place in his heart, and he enjoyed camping and fishing. He loved Harleys, working on cars, and the satisfaction that came from taking something apart, figuring out how it worked, and putting it back together again.
Roy also dearly loved his Chihuahuas, Joe and Ernie. They weren't simply his dogs; they were his companions and part of his family. Ernie shared an especially close bond with Roy, one that was evident until Roy's final moments. Ernie remained beside him with his head resting on Roy's knee, keeping watch and even growling when others approached. Loyal and protective to the very end, Ernie stayed exactly where he wanted to be, beside Roy.
But as much as Roy loved guitars, Harleys, mountains, fishing, and his dogs, nothing mattered more to him than his people. If you were part of Roy's circle, you knew you were loved. He loved deeply, fiercely, and loyally.
His grandchildren held an especially tender place in Roy's heart. There was something about being with them that brought out a different side of him, Roy simply lit up when his grandchildren were around.
Roy was also a jokester, funny and remarkably quick-witted. He and his daughter Carrie shared an ongoing love of playing practical jokes on one another, creating stories and memories that will undoubtedly be told for years to come. And then there was Roy's laugh. His laughter was contagious and unmistakably his. You didn't have to see him to know Roy was in the room; you could hear that laugh and know exactly who it belonged to.
Roy is survived by his beloved wife, Deanna Dawn Bowling; his children, Roy Bowling Jr. (Debra), Carrie Carlton, and Greg Davis; his grandchildren, Sierra (Andrew), Samantha (Jimmy), Wyatt, Eden (Carter), Dylan, and Taylor; his great-grandchildren, Colton and Sutton; his sisters, Tammy and Shonda; his brother, Tim; as well as several cousins, two sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Sherman Bowling and Helen Jean (Hamblin) Bowling; and his brothers, Wayne, Al, and Danny.
Roy will be remembered as a man who stood his ground, worked hard, spoke plainly, loved fiercely, played his music, and laughed loudly. He leaves behind a lifetime of stories, practical jokes, guitars, motorcycles, mountains, loyal four-legged companions, and people who knew without question how much they meant to him.
And somewhere in all those memories, there will always be that unmistakable laugh.
A funeral will be held in Comstock, with details to be shared once arrangements are finalized.
