Richard William Ludwig, Jr., known affectionately to many as Rich, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2026, in Lawton, Michigan, the town that he called home for his entire life. Born on November 1, 1949, in Watervliet, Michigan, Rich lived a life marked by kindness, dedication, and a genuine connection to those around him.
Rich was a man who truly knew no strangers. Gifted with an affable nature, he possessed the remarkable ability to engage in meaningful conversation with anyone he met. Described by friends and family as the nicest guy you’d ever meet, his favorite word was “wonderful,” a reflection of his positive outlook on life and the people he cherished. His warmth and openness left an indelible impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
After faithfully serving his country in the Army, where he achieved the rank of Sergeant, Rich dedicated 38 years of his career to Welch’s, earning respect and admiration for his hard work and commitment.
Rich’s passions extended beyond his professional life; he was an avid hunter, but his greatest love was fishing. He could speak about fishing with unparalleled enthusiasm and knowledge, sharing stories and techniques that captivated audiences young and old alike. Rich’s passion inspired many children, whom he took under his wing to teach the art of fishing. Known for always knowing exactly where the fish were biting, he participated in numerous fishing tournaments over the years, displaying both skill and sportsmanship.
Despite the passage of time, Rich maintained lifelong friendships that began in grade school, underscoring his enduring loyalty and genuine care for those he loved.
Rich is lovingly remembered by his sister, Lorie (Gene) Moreman; his caregivers, Tamara Ludwig and Rob Stanndard; his nieces and nephews, Kasey (Dameion) Ludwig-Averill, Sharon (Brian) Horch, Daniel (Edith) Zamora, and Ryan (Savanah) Zamora; and his sister-in-law, Jodi Ludwig. Though he has departed from this world, the memory of Rich’s kindness, friendship, and passion will continue to inspire those who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard William Ludwig, Sr. and Lorraine Ludwig, as well as his brother, Lance Ludwig.
