Paul William Happ, age 77, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a life defined by service, compassion, and dedication to others.
Paul was born on November 26, 1948, in Detroit, Michigan, to his late mother, Ruth Happ. He spent his early years in Detroit before moving to Melvindale, Michigan, where he graduated from high school in 1966. Shortly after graduation, Paul answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps.
During his time in the Marines, Paul served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He earned numerous commendations for his service and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Paul was honorably discharged in July of 1972, carrying with him a deep sense of pride in having served his country.
Following his military service, Paul held a variety of jobs, but his true calling was always helping others. That passion first showed through his involvement with ski patrol, which ultimately led him into a career in nursing. Paul dedicated many years to caring for others before retiring from the profession.
Paul married Laura Wells, and together they built a family centered on love and support. He was a man who found joy in the simple things in life. He loved cooking, spending time on the slopes skiing, kayaking, attending car shows, and working on cars. He had a special appreciation for Studebakers and Mazda Miatas, owning two Miatas over the years.
Above all, Paul will be remembered as a caring and devoted family man. His kindness, steady presence, and willingness to help others left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his sister Mary (Doug) Brown of Florida; his daughter Megan (Ronnie) West of Berrien Springs, Michigan; his son Joel Happ of Fishers, Indiana; and his three grandchildren, Hailee, Jacob, and Arielle Allen of Niles, Michigan. He is also survived by his nephew Geoffrey Long of Alexandria, Virginia, and his niece Dr. Amy Long of Nanaimo, British Columbia.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 2, at 1:00 PM, with visitation beginning at 12:00 PM, at Calvary Bible Church, 855 South Drake Road, Kalamazoo, Michigan. A dessert bar will follow the service, where family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, and celebrate Paul’s life.
