Michael John
Coon
May 29, 1960 – April 7, 2026
Michael John Coon, known affectionately as Mike, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2026, in Niles, Michigan. Born on May 29, 1960, in Long Beach, California, Mike's life was marked by a deep connections, a strong work ethic, and a loving spirit that touched all who knew him. Those who knew him recognized his occasional stubborn nature or being "rough around the edges" as one friend mentioned. Even so, you learned to accept him as he was because there was also a profound kindness, mentorship and capacity for love.
Professionally, he dedicated himself as an electrician and construction worker, fields in which his skill and dedication were well respected. Tree service was another job he enjoyed.
He cherished time spent with his family, especially his two sons, Jonathan Medlin (Rebecca) and Michael Coon (Taylor Czerwinski), whom he regarded as his proudest accomplishments. His love extended warmly to his four grandchildren: Brayden, Bree, Braxton, and Oliver, who were a continual source of joy and pride in his later years. Included in his family circle was his former spouse and friend, Linda Kachoris. Survived also by his sister, Elise Cole who resides in New Jersey.
His life was also shaped by the memories of those who preceded him in death: his parents, Elmore and Millicent Coon; and fondly his former in-laws, Joseph and Starr Kachoris; and former brother-in-law, Joe Kachoris.
Mike was proud of his Native American Heritage and honored it throughout his life. Outdoorsmanship, deer and mushroom hunting and being in nature were enduring passions for him. His free spirit gave him a Gypsy type flair from all the little things he collected and as he says, "tinkering" from his garage or estate sale findings, was a pastime he enjoyed. He loved adding leather and beads to many of his personal and shared items as many may have noticed. Frisbee golf was a favorite.
A happy place that Mike looked forward to being is Charleston, SC, where he enjoyed all the connecting islands and the ability to hunt for sharks teeth and other small treasures. Although not being comfortable in group gatherings, he enjoyed bantering with many people he encountered during his daily routines whether it be here in Niles or Charleston. I'm sure he will be missed from those acquaintances.
He took much pride keeping up with his truck and all his sticker embellishments from his many travels. Above all, the moments spent with his boys, whether helping each with projects or sharing a meal and watching movies, brought him the greatest happiness.
He will be remembered and truly missed. We want to thank Family First Funeral & Cremation Services in Marcellus, MI for their kindness and help through this difficult time.
