Mark Watson, beloved father, son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a family and community who will miss him deeply.

Mark was known for his intelligence, curiosity, generosity, and remarkable ability to figure things out. He had a natural talent for fixing, building, and engineering just about anything. Long before the internet could provide an answer, Mark somehow seemed to already know how things worked, or was determined to figure them out.

Mark grew up in a rural area of Bay City, Michigan, near Auburn, where he and his brothers had the freedom to explore the woods and wide-open spaces around their home. He graduated from Western High School in 1987. As a young person, Mark played Little League softball and spent many years swimming in middle school and high school. Many of his childhood adventures involved lifelong family friends, camping, go-karts, and the occasional homemade science experiment. Those memories became part of the foundation of the close friendships and family bonds that Mark carried throughout his life. He later made his home in the Kalamazoo, Michigan, area, where he spent the past 36 years.

Mark’s greatest pride was his daughters, Dakota and Wren. They meant the world to him, and he was endlessly proud of them. He was an incredibly devoted father, and his love for his daughters was evident to everyone who knew him.

Mark was also someone who could be counted on when it mattered. He was generous with his time, his talents, and his home, and he would do almost anything for the people he loved. He had a way of making friends wherever he went, and he remained well loved by the many people whose lives he touched.

Mark is survived by his daughters, Dakota and Wren; his mother, Dianne Johnson; his older brother, Brian Watson; his younger brother, Brad Watson and Brad’s husband, Jason Steele; his step-siblings, Chris Johnson and Carol Johnson; his nieces, Ashley Watson, Lauren Watson, and Brooke Watson; his former wife, Kate Morton; and many extended family members and lifelong friends who will remember him fondly.

He was preceded in death by his father, Tim Watson; his stepfather, Pat Johnson; and his stepbrother, Andy Johnson.

Mark will be remembered for his brilliant mind, adventurous spirit, generous heart, and above all, the love and pride he had for his daughters. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a family who will carry those memories with them always.

A Celebration of Life for Mark will take place on Saturday, August 22, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Main Street Pub on Gull Road in Kalamazoo, Michigan. A second Celebration of Life will be held in Bay City, Michigan, on Saturday, September 26. Please reach out to a family member for additional details about either gathering.
