Judith Claire Hovda, age 82, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2026, surrounded by love, with her beloved grandson and best friend, TJ Hovda, by her side. She was born on June 12, 1944, in Parchment, Michigan, to Clare and Rosamond Rowen.

Judith lived life exactly the way she wanted to. She was strong-willed, determined, and never afraid to do things her own way. She had a fighting spirit that carried her through life’s joys and hardships alike, and those who loved her wouldn’t have wanted her any other way.

For more than 30 years, Judith dedicated her life to the children of Paw Paw Elementary School. She wasn’t simply a teacher. She believed every child deserved patience, encouragement, and the opportunity to succeed. As her career evolved, she found a special calling working one on one with students who needed a little extra help. She celebrated their victories, no matter how small, and quietly made a difference in more lives than she probably ever realized.

After losing her beloved husband, Paul E. Hovda, in 2009, life changed in many ways. Through it all, one person remained a constant—her grandson, TJ. What started as a grandson helping his grandmother grew into a friendship unlike any other. They shared countless conversations, everyday adventures, laughter, and quiet moments together. TJ became her sidekick, and before long, it was hard to think of one without the other.

Their relationship wasn’t defined by obligation but by genuine friendship, trust, and unconditional love. It was a bond that brought Judith comfort, laughter, and purpose throughout the years, and one that will continue to be cherished by everyone who witnessed it.

Judith is lovingly remembered by her devoted grandson and caregiver, TJ Hovda, whose unwavering love and care allowed her to remain surrounded by comfort and family throughout her later years. She is also survived by her daughter, Kathy; her sister, Janet VanLinder; her nieces and nephews, Denis VanLinder, Tammy Sharp, and Brad VanLinder; along with her cherished great-nieces and great-nephews, Jessie VanLinder, Katie VanLinder, Tara Sharp, Tyler Sharp, Jason VanLinder, Kelsey VanLinder, and Kelly VanLinder.

She was preceded in passing by her beloved husband, Paul E. Hovda; her parents, Clare and Rosamond Rowen; her son, Phillip; and her daughter, Joelle Lynn. The loss of her children was a heartache she carried throughout her life, and there is comfort in knowing they have now been reunited.

Judith’s life will be remembered not only by the years she lived, but by the countless young lives she helped shape, the family she loved fiercely, and the quiet difference she made simply by being herself.

In accordance with Judith’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and no visitation or funeral service will be held. She found comfort in life’s simple moments and asked that those who knew and loved her remember her in their own meaningful way.
