John Swain, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, peacefully passed away on August 5, 2025, at his home in Battle Creek, surrounded by those he loved the most. Born on April 17, 1950, in Fort Riley, Kansas, John lived a life that reflected his dedication to hard work, kindness, and community spirit.

Throughout his life, John kept himself busy with various jobs, showcasing his remarkable work ethic. At the time he met his beloved wife, Kathy, he was balancing four jobs, two part-time and two full-time, including his cherished role as a lawn maintenance worker. John's last full-time position was as a forklift operator at R&L, where he continued to work until his passing, a testament to his commitment to staying productive and engaged.

A true handyman at heart, John was known for always being able to find a solution to any problem and proudly maintained a perfectly manicured lawn, which brought him great joy. He was an avid outdoorsman, thriving in nature and often enjoyed fishing in his younger years. John also had a special love for animals, particularly his dogs — Nelly-Belle, Izzy, and Penny, who brought him much happiness and companionship.

John was not only a hardworking individual but also a mentor to many young people in his life. His passion for coaching was evident through his dedication to the kids in the Junior League bowling team, where he shared his wisdom and guidance, helping them navigate life's challenges. He felt like a father figure to many, and his kindness touched the lives of those around him.

As a proud member of the Navy, John served with honor and was an active participant in Post 54 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in his younger years, contributing to the honor guard and attending parades, football games, and special events. His military service was a source of pride for him and a reflection of his commitment to his country.

John is survived by his loving wife, Kathy Swain; his children, Jennifer, and Marci; his stepchildren, Eric (Sonia), and Bill (Tammy); his siblings, Rosemary, Charles, and Mary (Mark); his grandchildren, Andre'a, Hayden (Ashlynn), Brendon, Chandler, Adrianna, and Christopher; and great-grandchildren, Little John and Wealey. He was also cherished by many close friends and chosen children who affectionately referred to him as "Pops."

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Reba Swain; his sister, Christina; and his first wife, Patricia Swain, who sadly passed away in 1985.

John's legacy will live on through the countless memories shared by his loved ones and the values he instilled in those he guided. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to hospice for bringing him home, allowing him to be comfortable with his beloved family during his final days.
