John Lewis Oswalt, a beloved figure in the heart of Vicksburg, Michigan, passed away on August 29, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on January 20, 1939, in Kalamazoo, John was a lifelong resident of his cherished community, where he earned the respect and admiration of many through his unwavering dedication to family and farming.
Raised on the family farm, John worked alongside his father, Foster, and brother, Gordon, where the values of hard work, humility, and stewardship were planted deep in the soil. Under the boundless skies and amidst the gentle rustle of farmland, John learned that every chore was an opportunity to grow. He passed these lessons on to his children, instilling in them a robust work ethic and a an appreciation of hard work.
A proud graduate of Vicksburg High School’s class of 1957, John’s talents extended beyond agriculture. He was a member of the Michigan State University Marching Band and played trumpet during the 1957 Rose Bowl a moment of pride and joy that reflected his deep love for music. He possessed the rare gift of playing by ear, a quiet talent that brought harmony to his life and delight to those around him.
John was a man of quiet strength and a steward of the land. He didn’t seek attention, but his actions spoke volumes guiding his choices, grounding his character, and shaping the way he treated those around him. He led with patience, kindness, and a genuine willingness to help, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and integrity.
He married the love of his life, Linda Slanker, and together they built a home filled with love, laughter, and purpose. They raised three children; Jeff (Brinda), Justin (Jessica), and Sherry (Tom Ihling) on the same land that had shaped John’s own childhood. He delighted in the company of his family, often entertaining them with tales of his life, punctuated by flashes of humor and heartfelt wisdom.
Professionally, John carved out a respected role in the agricultural community. As a member of the National Sheep Producers Board, he traveled the country writing and approving grants that supported farmers nationwide. He and Linda were honored as Sheep Producers of the Year, a recognition of their tireless dedication and impact. Their farm also served as a training ground for MSU Veterinary School students, where John mentored young veterinarians with his signature patience and quiet guidance.
John’s love for his grandchildren—John (Ellie) Ihling, Nick Ihling, Bella (Matt), Linkoln, Ava (David), Sophia (Caitlin), Jaxson, Ruby, Lola, and Violet—was evident in every moment shared. He also carried the memory of his late granddaughter Laila, daughter of Jessica and Justin, close to his heart. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Tommy and Isla children of John & Ellie Ihling.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Foster and Marian Oswalt, his brother Gordon, and his granddaughter Laila. He leaves behind his devoted wife Linda, his children and grandchildren, and a legacy that will continue to bloom in the lives he touched.
John Lewis Oswalt lived a life of purpose, humility, and grace. He was a steward of the land and a man whose legacy will echo through generations. His life and lessons are not just remembered they are lived, in every sunrise over the fields he loved and in every act of kindness inspired by his example.
