Joan Diane Panfil, born on June 10, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2026, at the Hanson Hospice Center in Stevensville, Michigan. She was the last surviving member of a vibrant family of eleven siblings and cherished the memories of her parents, Gerald and Eleanor (Seagrave) White, along with her ten brothers and sisters who preceded her in death.

Throughout her life, Joan's impressive career as a legal secretary showcased her dedication to the field, serving numerous affluent law firms in the Chicago area. In addition to her professional endeavors, she contributed her talents to the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council, where she played an essential role in translating the neighborhood newspaper from Spanish to English. Her intelligence and keen sense of humor endeared her to those around her, making a significant impact on the lives she touched.

Joan was a devoted mother to her children, Margaret Coomer, Kathy Kline, Cindy Clegg Klein, Timothy Charles Panfil, and Todd Panfil. Her bond with her family extended to her numerous grandchildren, especially her close relationships with Ericka and Timothy. She is also survived by many great‑grandchildren and the Barnett side of the family in Southern Illinois. Joan was preceded in death by her first husband, Virgil Barnett, as well as her second husband, Tom Panfil and her daughter, Karen Barnett who passed away seven years ago. Her love for travel was notably shared with her daughter Margaret, creating lasting memories together that they both cherished.

In addition to her family life, Joan was actively involved in her community, volunteering at hospitals in South Haven, where she offered her time and support to those in need. Her dedication to helping others, particularly with legal issues, was a testament to her kind‑hearted nature.

Joan’s life was marked by resilience, compassion, and an unwavering ability to bring laughter to those around her. She found joy in both her family and her work, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and love that will resonate with all who had the privilege to know her.
