Joan Modaff, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister and a beloved matriarch, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2025, in Lawton, Michigan at the age of 91. Born in Detroit, Michigan, on October 11, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Kathryn (Carey) Handloser.

Joan dedicated her life to her role as a homemaker, providing love and stability for her family. She was a proud graduate of Dominican High School, an all-girls Catholic school in Detroit, where her strong Catholic faith was nurtured. This faith remained a cornerstone of her life, guiding her values and actions as she became active in her parish, St. David's.

Throughout her life, Joan found joy in simple pleasures, such as solving puzzles and working on cross-stitch projects. Her kindness extended beyond her family as she volunteered her time with the Red Cross, embodying her spirit of service and community.

Joan is survived by her two sons, Robert (Kim) Modaff, Jr. and Michael (Donna) Modaff; five granddaughters; two great granddaughters; and her brother, Robert (June) Handloser.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Modaff, Sr.; her son, Thomas Modaff; and two brothers, Thomas (Patricia) Handloser and James Handloser.

Joan's memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her, as she leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and community service. Joan will be laid to rest at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Detroit. At this time, there are no formal services planned.
