James Michael Richards "Mike", a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away on May 2, 2025, at the age of 64, surrounded by his family in Marcellus, Michigan, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. Born on September 22, 1960, in Clarksburg, West Virginia, Mike lived a life of service, hard work, and devotion to his loved ones.
A member of the Class of 1979 from Bridgeport High School, Mike enlisted in the U.S. Army, demonstrating his dedication to service. Following his military career, he became a Firefighter/EMT in Texas, continuing his commitment to helping others. In 1989, he and Karen relocated to Michigan, where he began working as a service technician in manufactured housing, applying his skills with the same work ethic and determination that defined his life. Finally, in 2008, he fulfilled a lifelong dream by climbing into a big rig and hitting the open road, embracing the freedom and adventure of trucking.
Mike and Karen shared 49 years together, including 45 years of marriage—a testament to their love and partnership. In 1998 their journey led them to Marcellus, where they embraced country life and built a home filled with laughter, love, and cherished moments with their three sons: James, Kirby, and Michael.
Mike enjoyed studying the Bible, immersing himself in the wisdom of scripture, and sharing insights through his writings. Mike had a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors. Saturday “Family Game Night” became a tradition, filled with board games, card games, and cookouts that brought family together over food and laughter.
He leaves behind a vibrant family that will carry his legacy forward: his beloved wife, Karen; his sons, James, Kirby, and Michael; his siblings, Vicki (Dave) Crawford of Bridgeport, WV, and Tim (Dina) Richards of Myrtle Beach, SC; and four grandchildren, James, Joseph, Emma (Richards), and Arielle Haefner. He also leaves behind five great-grandchildren, his stepmother, Patricia Richards of Fairmont, WV, a sister-in-law, four brothers-in-law, two aunts, an uncle, and countless other family members and friends who adored him.
Mike joins his parents, James Mack Richards and Norma Jean (Hurst) Richards, as well as his father-in-law, Teddy E. Roby, mother-in-law Roberta Roby, sister-in-law Katie Roby, and several aunts and uncles, all of whom he missed dearly.
Mike's light continues to shine in the hearts of all who knew him. His unwavering spirit and love for life will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come.
