James Willis Nelson Jr., known to many as “Jimmy” or “Slim,” rode his final mile on July 6, 2025, passing peacefully at home in Plainwell, Michigan. Born and raised in Plainwell, Jimmy lived a life defined by loyalty, love, and the open road.
Jimmy’s journey began on October 1, 1958, and from the start, he was a man of quiet strength and steady hands. He built a respected career in ink manufacturing, rising from Maintenance Technician to Technical Service Manager through grit, skill, and a work ethic that never wavered. He was the kind of man who didn’t just get the job done—he earned the respect of everyone around him while doing it.
But Jimmy’s true legacy wasn’t just in the work he did—it was in the life he lived. He was a family man through and through, the kind of guy who found his peace at the family cabin on Duck Lake in Gobles. Whether cruising the water or swapping stories on the porch, Jimmy was happiest surrounded by those he loved. Fishing wasn’t his thing, but good company, a calm breeze, and a cold drink? That was his kind of heaven.
His love story with Margaret, his devoted wife, began like something out of a movie—leather vest, club colors, and a spark that lit up a barroom and never dimmed. What started as a chance encounter turned into a lifelong bond that spanned 42 wonderful years—40 of them as husband and wife. As they got to know each other, they discovered they already shared a web of mutual friends, as if the universe had been quietly weaving their paths together all along. Together, they built a life full of laughter, adventure, and unwavering partnership, weathering life’s twists and turns with the kind of love that only grows stronger with time.
Jimmy was also a proud and loyal member of the Outriders Motorcycle Club. The brotherhood he found there was more than a pastime—it was a second family. He lived for the ride, the roar of the engine beneath him, and the bond forged on long stretches of highway. His mellow spirit and easy smile made him a trusted brother, a steady presence, and a friend to all who rode beside him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret; daughters Lisa and Amy; brother Mike (Mia); Brother-in-law Tom Morris (partner Shelley Dresen); sister-in-law Deb Morris Rooney; brother-in-law Tim Pio and sister-in-law Cindy Pio. He also leaves behind his beloved Aunt Janette Carper and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and club brothers who will carry his memory forward.
Jimmy now rides on with those who went before him—his father, James Nelson; mother, Petra Summers; sister, Helen; brothers Randy and Steven; and many cherished aunts and uncles.
His was a life well-lived: full throttle, full heart. Jimmy’s legacy is one of quiet strength, deep loyalty, and a love that never quit. May the road rise to meet him, and may we all ride a little freer in his honor.
Ride in peace, Slim. You’ll never be forgotten.
