James Earl Allen

June 6, 1936 — June 15, 2025

Muskegon, MI

James Earl Allen, a beloved figure in his community, family, and friends, passed away on June 15, 2025, at the age of 89 in Muskegon, MI. Born on June 6, 1936, in the small town of Arkabutla, MS, James carried a spirit of adventure that led him from his roots in Northern Mississippi to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, then a brief detour in Northern Indiana, before finally settling in Muskegon, where he spent the last 40 years of his life.

James was not just a son, brother, uncle, and friend; he was a beacon of love and support, whose fun-loving and outgoing nature touched all who had the privilege of knowing him. He found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life—music, companionship, and the great outdoors. His passion for music, especially the soulful tunes of Tyrone Davis, was a cornerstone of his character. His niece, April, fondly remembers the joyful moments spent dancing with her uncle to “Turn Back the Hands of Time," an enduring memory that speaks to the heartwarming bond they shared.

His dedication to family was mirrored in his willingness to lend a helping hand to neighbors, making him a cherished member of the Muskegon community. James was known for his hard-working spirit and his commitment to the wellbeing of his neighbors, always eager to assist in the upkeep of his surroundings. Friends like Rob, Brenda, and Marcella valued him not just as a neighbor, but as a friend who could be counted on.

James was a man who loved fishing and being outdoors, often spending days immersed in nature, where he felt most alive. His love for animals was evident in his adoration for his cats and his loyal companion, Duke, a loving Labrador who brought him much joy throughout the years.

Survived by his brother Hubert (Naomi) Vinson and his beloved nieces and nephew—April Ruffin, Willie (Alesia) Vinson, and Shonda Vinson—James leaves behind a legacy enriched with love and laughter. He is also remembered fondly by his great-niece Lauren Ruffin, as well as his cousins Heady Mae, Queen Gross-Hyler, Ernest Thomas, Rosie Thomas, and Tish Sanders. James is now reunited with his dear wife, Ethel Betty Allen, whom he cherished during their 26 years of marriage before her passing in 2007, along with his parents, Johnnie and Gussie Mae.

As we remember James, we celebrate a life well-lived, filled with kindness, cherished memories, and the music that echoed through his heart. His impact on those around him will forever resonate. He will be missed dearly but will always remain in the hearts of those he touched.
