Gene H. Thaler, a beloved figure in his community and cherished family member, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2025, at the age of 82 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Born in 1943 in Freeport, Michigan, Gene lived a life marked by selflessness, devotion to family, and a commitment to serving others.
Gene’s career was rooted in numbers, working as an accountant for several different companies throughout his career, including HBJ and Audio Advisor. His professional life showcased his dedication and reliability, but it was his post-retirement years that revealed his caring nature. Gene devoted his time to volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, helping to build homes for those in need.
Beyond his career and volunteer work, Gene was an Army veteran, having served for three years and was honorably discharged with a rank of Specialist 5th Class. This experience shaped his respectful demeanor and grounded personality. Gene had a quiet strength about him; he was a man of few words but was always ready to support his community and lend his love and assistance to family.
Family was paramount in Gene’s life. He is survived by two children, Jennifer (Michael) Slater and Chris (Katrina) Thaler, who will carry on his legacy of love and care. Gene was a proud grandfather to four grandchildren: Logan, Abigail, Harlo, and Emmett, who brought him immense joy and pride. He also leaves behind his brother, Gary (Sue) Thaler, and a significant other, Margene Tagg, whom he had known since high school. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Bertha Thaler, and his brother, Gayle (Dawn) Thaler.
Gene had a profound appreciation for the great outdoors, often finding solace in fishing and hunting. He cherished the moments spent deer hunting in northern Michigan with his brothers, where the camaraderie and relaxation were as important as the hunt itself. His love for sports, particularly baseball and all of the Michigan teams, was a testament to his spirited nature. In addition, Gene enjoyed bowling, golfing, and especially spending time out on the lake. Being in the paddle boat fishing on Sugarbush was an activity that brought him peace and happiness.
Gene H. Thaler leaves behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and love. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, as he profoundly touched many lives through his selfless virtues and compassion. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the community he served so heartily. For those desiring, memorial contributions in Gene's memory may be made to Habitat for Humanity, Barry Countyhttps://www.hfhbarrycounty.org/donate/. The family is planning a celebration of life memorial service for the summer of 2026. Details will be announced once they are finalized.
