Together Forever Fredrick James Copen, 79, passed away on March 13, 2026, and his beloved wife, Joanne Slack Copen, 78, followed him on July 2, 2026. They were married on August 20, 1966, and shared nearly 60 years of love, laughter, hard work, and unwavering devotion to one another.

Though our hearts were broken by losing them just four months apart, we find comfort in knowing they are together once again. Fred and Joanne built a life centered around family. They were the loving parents of James Arthur "Jimmy" Copen, who passed away at just six weeks of age; Melissa; Monica; and John. In the 1990s, they also adopted their greatniece, Holly. They also leave behind many cherished grandchildren, three greatgrandchildren, extended family, and countless friends whose lives were enriched by knowing them.

Fred was a skilled builder who spent his career constructing Chicken Coop restaurants throughout Michigan. During the summer months, he often brought his family along while he worked so they could camp together and make memories in each new town. Quiet by nature but blessed with a wonderful sense of humor, Fred enjoyed watching Gunsmoke and could often be heard singing "King Tut," bringing smiles to those around him.

Joanne dedicated herself to raising her children before beginning a career at the local middle school and later working at Big Top Market and Walmart. She never met a stranger and genuinely loved talking with people. She was honest, outspoken, and never one to sugarcoat her opinions. She especially loved music from the 1950s and 1960s and couldn't resist singing along whenever one of her favorite songs came on. To her grandchildren, she was lovingly known as Gramma Jo Jo, a name that will forever bring smiles and cherished memories.

Fred courageously battled a long illness for three years, determined to recover so he could continue caring for Joanne, who lived with dementia for the last ten years of her life. Their love and commitment to one another remained steadfast through every challenge they faced. If you knew Fred and Joanne, you knew that home was wherever they were together. Together, Fred and Joanne built a life filled with love, resilience, friendship, and memories that will live on in everyone fortunate enough to know them.

They are missed beyond words, but we find peace in believing they have been reunited with Jimmy, hand in hand once again. 

A joint graveside service celebrating the lives of Fred and Joanne Copen will be held at a later date. Details will be shared with family and friends when arrangements have been finalized.
