Fredrick Byron Coonfer, Sr., a man whose warmth and genuine ability to connect with others left a lasting impact on all who knew him, passed away on March 29, 2026, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Born on January 24, 1961, in Detroit, Michigan, Fredrick’s life was marked by his kind spirit and his remarkable talent for engaging people with ease and sincerity.
Throughout his life, Fredrick found joy in moments spent on the water, indulging his love of boating and kite flying. He had a passion for cars that echoed his appreciation for craftsmanship and the simple pleasures in life. He had a love for collectibles and a love and challenge for the game of Poker. These interests reflected a man who cherished both the calm of nature and the vibrant energy of life’s adventures.
Fredrick’s family was the cornerstone of his existence. He is survived by his devoted wife, Kimberly, whom he married on July 7, 1982. Together, they built a loving family that grew to include six children: Christian, Frederick, Koren, James Earl, Roseann, and Zachary. His legacy further lives on through his numerous grandchildren, who brought immeasurable joy to his later years. Fredrick also is survived by three beloved sisters—Deborah Watchowski, Pamela Dubey, and Susan Watterson—who stood by him throughout life’s journey.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman E. Coonfer and Roseanne Gardner, and his brother, Norman E. Coonfer II. Their memories, along with the profound influence of Fredrick’s life, remain a cherished part of his family’s heritage.
Fredrick's passing leaves a deep void, but the imprint of his compassionate nature and the warmth with which he embraced those around him ensures that he will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. His presence was a gift to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege to know him, embodying a spirit of connection and kindness that will endure through the lives he touched.
