“A life devoted to family, community, and creativity.”

Elon Rose Ruge, age 81, of Colon, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on February 3, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Born on March 6, 1944, in Stockton, California, to Ruben (Pete) and Ruby (Hill) Russell, Elon’s life was a testament to dedication, ingenuity, and unwavering commitment to the people and places she cherished.

On July 6, 1963, Elon married the love of her life, Charles “Chuck” Ruge, in Costa Mesa, California. Together, they built a life full of love, adventure, and partnership. In the summer of 1969, Elon and Chuck made their home in Colon, Michigan, where she became an integral part of the community.

Elon’s passion for service shone through her years of work with the Colon Community School system. She was a devoted supporter of school sports, an organizer of countless fundraisers, and a driving force behind community initiatives. As President of the Colon Chamber of Commerce, Elon poured her energy into fostering growth and unity, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.

A lifelong entrepreneur, Elon’s creativity and work ethic knew no bounds. She founded and operated several successful businesses, including her beloved beauty shop, Haircare Headquarters in Colon, MI, as well as multiple flower shops. For over 30 years, she nurtured a passion for real estate, managing rental properties, and also ventured into jewelry and sign sales. Her drive and one-of-a-kind personality inspired everyone around her.

Above all, Elon centered her life around her husband and family. Their home was always a welcoming hub for gatherings and celebrations. Elon found joy in music, often playing the piano and filling their home with song. She was a steadfast supporter of her friends and family, always ensuring they felt seen and valued. Later in life, she and Chuck enjoyed simple pleasures together, including trips to the casino. Elon maintained close connections with family both near and far, reaching out often and remaining deeply committed to those she loved.

Elon is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, Charles “Chuck” Ruge; her children Charlie Ruge, Cheryl (Todd) Hansman, and Chris (Jamie) Ruge; her brother Bruce Russell; her niece Kimberly Root; her beloved aunt Syble Bokides and her grandchildren Blake (Racheall) Ruge, Rashalle (Jimmy) Austin, Cameron Ruge, Rachel (Greg) Blanco, Chelsea Hansman, Chase (Kari) Hansman, and Riley (Megan) Hansman; numerous nieces and nephews; eight great grandchildren; and five great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings Carolyn Russell Evola and Johnny Russell and her niece LeAnne Russell.

Elon’s laughter, strength, creativity, and the joy she brought into every room will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

In honor of Elon’s love for gatherings, the family invites all who knew her to a Celebration of Life and birthday celebration on March 6th, Elon’s birthday, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Heritage Hall, 1776 Heritage Dr., Coldwater, MI 49036.
