Douglas E. Gove passed away on May 7, 2025, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, at the age of 62. Born on July 25, 1962, in Kalamazoo, Doug was a man who left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Doug's educational journey began at Richland High School in Richland Hills, Texas, from which he graduated in 1980. He pursued his passion for cooking, completing culinary school and ultimately rising to the role of head chef for Arkansas State University. His talents in the kitchen were matched only by his remarkable ability to make those around him feel valued and loved.
A proud Army Veteran, Doug served his country with commendable dedication, honing his skills as a chef while in the military.
Known for his dry sense of humor and generous spirit, Doug always put others before himself. He had a unique gift for surprising loved ones with thoughtful presents, particularly his beloved niece, Marissa Ayers, to whom he delighted in sending cat socks and Rock n Roll t-shirts. His unconditional love extended to all those in his life; he welcomed everyone without judgment and bore no grudges.
Doug found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid fisherman, often considering a perfect day as one spent on a pontoon, casting lines, grilling, and enjoying a cold beer. His love for good food and music was a constant theme in his life, serving as a backdrop to many gatherings with family and friends.
He was also a devoted mentor to younger generations, imparting the values of hard work and financial literacy. His influence as a father figure to Cameron and Shea, as well as a grandfather figure to Grayson, Xzavier, Ayden, Zeek, and Colton, showcased his nurturing nature.
Doug is survived by his loving mother, Barbara Gove; his sister, Jody (Troy) Ayers; his niece, Marissa Ayers; his children Aja, Douglas, and Ashley; along with his lifelong companion and best friend, Vicki Rafferty-Polk; his beloved dog, Benji; and his longtime care provider, Sipi. His legacy will continue to live on through the many lives he touched and the hearts he warmed. He is preceded in death by his father, Leroy Cox; stepfather, Bruce Gove; and an infant brother, Leroy.
