David Allan Smelker, Jr., passed away on April 26, 2026, at Bronson Hospital in Battle Creek. He was born on August 17, 1968, in Hastings, Michigan. Growing up in Freeport, Michigan, David graduated from Thornapple Kellogg High School, laying the foundation for a career as a welder and metal fabricator. David also enjoyed spending time watching movies and sports with his close friends, moments that enriched his life beyond his work. David was an Army veteran, who was stationed in Germany for several years as a Army Medic.

He is survived by his mother, Linda (Robert) Rosa; his brother, Robert (Shannon) Smelker; and his daughter, Alexis Lawson. David also leaves behind nephews Evan, Ryan, and Caden Smelker, and niece Kristin (Daniel) Huver. His extended family includes uncles Jon (Colleen) Smelker, Mike Steele, Bill Steele, Mark Steele, and Dave Steele, as well as cousins Brad (Amy) Smelker and Scott Smelker. Among those closest to him, his friends JC and James stand as enduring companions who shared in his joys and interests.

David was preceded in death by his father, David Allan Smelker Sr.; step-brother Robert Rosa, Jr.; step-sister BJ Rosa; cousin Mark Smelker; and uncles Tim Steele and Gary Steele.
