Christine Helen Covey, a cherished educator and devoted family member, passed away on August 12, 2025, in Coldwater, Michigan. Born on August 18, 1949, in Fall River, Massachusetts, Christine dedicated much of her life to the service of others, particularly through her career in special needs education. Over her 30-year career, Christine worked with children and adults in schools, group homes, and clubhouses, leaving a lasting impact on her students and their families.
Christine's educational journey began with a Bachelor’s degree from Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts, where she majored in Special Education. Her commitment to her profession was complemented by her deep compassion for all those she taught. Known for being reserved but immensely supportive, Christine was always there for her family, friends, and church community, attending services at the Free Methodist Church in Coldwater and actively participating on the board.
As a mother, Christine was profoundly dedicated to her daughter, Jenna Schmitt. She created countless cherished memories, including sailing adventures with her first husband, Bill Smith, and encouraging Jenna in her 4H horse showing endeavors, and being the best supportive band mom. This passion for being present continued as Christine fostered a special bond with her grandson, John Schmitt IV. She attended every band concert and event, proudly supporting him as a steadfast band grandmother. Her commitment to family and events extended to many accomplishments, showcasing her unwavering encouragement throughout the years.
In addition to her roles as a mother and grandmother, Christine's unique gifts were recognized in her youth as she was inducted into the athletic hall of fame for multidiscipline athletics in high school. Her dedication shone through as she earned letters in four sports, a testament to her determination and spirit.
Christine is survived by her loving husband, Jack Covey; her daughter, Jenna Schmitt; and her cherished grandson, John Schmitt IV. She is also remembered by her siblings Annie and David, along with many nieces, nephews and family members who will carry forward her legacy of support and love. Christine was predeceased by her parents, Roland and Georgette Provost, and her brother Allan.
Christine Helen Covey’s life was one of dedication, and service. Her impact will be felt by all who knew her, as they remember her for her kindness, her support, and her unwavering presence. She leaves a beautiful legacy of pride in her family, a commitment to her profession, and an enduring spirit that continues to inspire.
