Cheryl Leigh Grimes, affectionately known as Sherry to her friends and family, embraced life with a kind heart and an uplifting spirit that touched everyone she met. Born in South Haven on September 5, 1945, she brought joy and laughter into this world and continued to do so until her passing in Kalamazoo on July 15, 2025.

Sherry dedicated herself to her career at the Kalamazoo Gazette, delivering newspapers for the majority of her years. Her unwavering commitment to providing the community with news reflected her love for connection and communication—a true testament to her character.

Those who knew her well will fondly remember her bright smile during shopping trips, a pastime she cherished dearly. Sherry had a unique ability to turn even the simplest errands into adventures filled with laughter. Her love for puzzles and decorating showcased her creative flair, while her cherished rose of Sharon bushes reminded everyone of her appreciation for the beauty in life. She found immense joy at her lake house, where some of her happiest times were spent fishing, cooking, and making the most delicious apple pies that were so beloved, people would compete for a slice. The sweet aroma of her baking still lingers in the hearts of her loved ones.

Sherry's adventurous spirit led her to unforgettable experiences, including camping at Silver Lake with her husband, Joseph, whom she has since been reunited with. The couple created countless memories together, including thrilling rides on dune buggies that left everyone smiling. One of her more amusing memories involved her and her sorority sisters from the Kappa Gamma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi being humorously banned from Boyne Mountain for an incident involving mannequins and a pool—an anecdote that perfectly encapsulates her fun-loving nature.

Sherry was also a devoted 4-H horse mom, known for her creativity and unwavering support—even crafting elaborate costumes for the horses despite her fear of them. Her dedication extended to fair week, where she took joy in preparing meals for her husband’s Mounted Division group, making those gatherings all the more special. A lifelong upholsterer, she poured her skill and dedication into helping build their cherished lake house, where many family memories were made

As a proud mother, Sherry is survived by her beloved daughters, Jodie Grimes (Drew) and Tonya Bird (Joe). Her legacy also lives on through her cherished grandchildren, Taylor Grimes (Matt), Ashley Paddock (Brad), and Joey Bird (Ally), who brought immense joy to her life. Her siblings, Chuck Harring (Dorothy) and Lorie Kuhn, carry forward the love and stories shared over the years. Adding to the joyful chorus of her lineage are her great-grandchildren, Bradley Paddock, Brooklynn Paddock, Braxton Bird, Beckett Bird, and Blakely Bird. Among them, she found her best friend in Taylor. Taylor and her boyfriend Matt had a special bond with Sherry, caring for her till the end, making sure grandma always had the love and support she needed.

Sherry’s life was rich with laughter, love, and countless cherished memories. She exemplified kindness, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those fortunate enough to know her. While she may be gone, the warmth of her spirit will continue to shine brightly in the lives she touched. She is preceded in death by her loving parents, Charles and Edna Harring, and by her devoted husband, Joseph Grimes, with whom she shared a lifetime of love, laughter, and partnership.
