Charlotte Roberta Burghdoff, formerly known by her maiden name Conkle, was a radiant soul whose light brightened the lives of all who were fortunate enough to cross her path. Born on July 3, 1949, in the serene town of Buckroe Beach, Virginia, Charlotte's journey through this world came to a peaceful close at her home on May 2, 2025. Her untiring spirit, goofy disposition, and love for life were constants in her narrative, making her the beloved “life of the party” wherever she went.
Charlotte was the embodiment of a social butterfly, always engaging with warmth and laughter. She transformed ordinary moments into cherished memories, forever leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those she met. Known as a "jack of all trades," her versatility was admired by many. Not only did she thrive in her passions for arts and crafts, but she also had an insatiable curiosity for science. She skillfully blended her passions to create meaningful connections, sharing joyous moments with her grandson and caregiver, Brandon, and her great-grandson, Kris—memories they both cherished.
Her love for the outdoors mirrored her vibrant personality; she had a special fondness for gardening, influenced by her remarkable green thumb. Charlotte adored sunflowers and hummingbirds, passionately nurturing her garden, which became a sanctuary reflecting her sunny disposition. Her enthusiasm for life and love for meeting new people inspired everyone around her, forging lasting friendships and connections wherever she went.
The magnitude of her heart was evident in her familial bonds. She is survived by her loving daughters, Barbara Marie McCarrick and Laura Pearl Schroeder; her son, William Vearl Knorpp Jr.; her devoted brother, Douglas Conkle; and her caring brother, James Conkle. The laughter of many grandchildren and great-grandchildren echoed her legacy of love, reminding everyone of the beautiful connections she fostered in her lifetime. Charlotte also found companionship and love with her fiancée, Dave Grimes, embracing the joys of life together, alongside his children Anson and Brett (Amanda).
Charlotte's proudest accomplishment was becoming an ordained minister, a testament to her unwavering commitment to touching lives and fostering love and connection in more ways than one. She joined the ranks of those who had passed before her, including her dear father, Charles Conkle; her mother, Helen Loretta Kellum; and her sister, Laura Pearl Gabbard. Though she may have left this earth, the echoes of her laughter and the beauty of her spirit will remain forever in the hearts of her loved ones.
As we remember Charlotte, let us celebrate her wonderful essence—a quirky, loving woman who changed our lives for the better and will be profoundly missed. Rest in peace, dear Charlotte. Your vibrant spirit will echo in our hearts until we meet again.
