Aubrey E. Wheeler, Jr., affectionately called "Man," was born on December 9, 1970, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. On July 13, 2026, he passed away in his hometown. Aubrey’s journey closed in the very place it began, completing a circle of life filled with resilience, laughter, and a devotion to those he held dear.

Aubrey grew up in a warm and caring household, where family values were instilled from a young age. He attended Parchment schools and graduated from Parchment High School. His family was rooted in faith, and Aubrey spent many formative years attending Church of God Pentecostal, learning to navigate life with independence and thoughtfulness that remained hallmarks of his character.

He was a beloved son of the late Aubrey Wheeler and Shirley Wheeler, whom he honored with unwavering devotion. Even when life took him far from home for work, Aubrey always remained connected, never forgetting birthdays and faithfully sending his mother, “MaDear”, money each month as a tangible expression of love. Though both parents preceded him in death, their influence was ever-present in his actions and values.

Aubrey’s life was shaped by strong bonds with his family. His sister, Mi Mi Hornbuckle, and his brother, Jason Wheeler, stood by him through childhood's laughter and adulthood’s challenges. They enjoyed going to the Casey family reunions throughout the years. Jason fondly recalls a childhood spent in close quarters, sharing a bedroom and the secrets of growing up—late-night conversations, epic basketball battles in the driveway, and the cherished ritual of strategizing Christmas wish lists with military precision. Aubrey’s intelligence stood out, sometimes unfocused but always impressive when fully harnessed. He was both resourceful and resilient: these qualities, coupled with a stubborn, opinionated streak and a competitive spirit, especially in athletics, defined much of his life. Basketball was a particular passion, and he was known to always strive for success and victory, whether on the court or in the company of those he loved.

His thoughtful, if sometimes stubborn, nature made him a unique presence in the lives of many. He was known for his laughter, his picky eating habits, and his determination to succeed. Friends and family recall how he always checked in with calls when on the road, never allowing distance to diminish his care.

Aubrey worked primarily as a semi truck driver, a career that satisfied his desire for adventure and solitude. He found joy in traversing long routes, especially to the beautiful landscapes of the northwestern United States. The open road became both a workplace and a source of peace for him, and he embraced the independence that trucking afforded.

Family remained the constant anchor throughout Aubrey's life. He is survived by his sister Mi Mi (Ken) Hornbuckle; his brother, Jason Wheeler; his niece, Dr. Kasey Hornbuckle; nephews, Justin (Tally) Hornbuckle and Kole Hornbuckle; uncles, Darryl (Grace), Harvey, and Alton Wheeler; his cousins and friends. His love for them endured through every mile he traveled and every challenge he faced.

Aubrey’s story would be incomplete without mention of his resourcefulness, his commitment to trying—no matter the odds—and his lasting imprint on those around him. He wanted to succeed, and above all, he always tried his best. Those closest to him remember his persistence: he tried, until he could try no more.

He leaves behind a legacy of love demonstrated through action, heartfelt laughter, and memories that family and friends will carry forward, honoring the spirited man they affectionately called “Man.” Aubrey E. Wheeler, Jr. will be profoundly missed, but his memory will continue to inspire effort, thoughtfulness, and the courage to try—even against the hardest odds.

A Graveside service will be held Thursday, July 30, 2026 at 1:00pm at Riverside Cemetery in Kalamazoo.
